An Embrace Pole Art & Fitness FAQ
Curious about pole dancing but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. At Embrace Pole Art & Fitness, we hear the same thoughtful, honest questions every week, from people who are excited, nervous, or simply wondering if pole is “for them.”
This FAQ is here to answer those questions clearly, kindly, and without pressure, so you can decide if pole dancing feels like the right next step for you.
FAQ
Do I need to be strong or fit before starting pole dancing?
No. You do not need prior strength, fitness, or dance experience.
At Embrace Pole Art & Fitness, our beginner pole classes are designed to build strength gradually, not test what you already have. Many students begin with little to no upper-body strength and gain it through consistent, supported practice.
Pole dancing creates strength, it doesn’t require it.
Am I too old to take pole dancing classes?
There is no age limit on movement, expression, or growth.
We welcome adults of all ages at Embrace Pole Art and Fitness, and many students begin pole dancing in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Progress looks different for everyone, and that is not only respected here, it’s celebrated.
Is pole dancing only for women?
No. Pole dancing is for all genders.
Embrace Pole Art & Fitness is committed to creating an inclusive, respectful space in Edmonton for people of all gender identities and expressions. Pole is an art form and a fitness practice, not a gendered activity.
You belong here if you want to explore movement, strength, and creativity.
What should I wear to a pole dancing class?
For safety and grip, skin contact with the pole is important as you progress to higher levels, so shorts will be required. However, for your first few pole classes you can dress as if you are attending a yoga class.
For your first class we recommend:
- Yoga pants or shorts
- A workout top
- Bare feet
Please avoid applying lotions or oils on the day of class, as they make the pole slippery.
In Edmonton’s colder months, we also suggest bringing warm layers to wear before and after class.
Is pole dancing safe for beginners?
Yes, we teach beginners with care and intention.
Beginner pole classes at Embrace Pole Art & Fitness focus on:
- Proper warm-ups
- Foundational technique
- Controlled, progressive movement
You will never be asked to do anything you are not ready for. Our instructors prioritize safety, consent, and clear instruction in every class.
Do I need to be flexible to start pole dancing?
Not at all.
Flexibility is something that develops over time, not a requirement to begin. Many students start with limited flexibility (especially during Edmonton winters) and notice steady improvement through regular practice.
Pole meets your body where it is.
Is pole dancing a good workout?
Yes, pole dancing is a full-body workout.
Pole classes build:
- Upper body and grip strength
- Core stability
- Leg and glute strength
- Coordination and body awareness
Many students find pole more motivating than traditional fitness routines because it’s creative, skill-based, and joyful.
Is pole dancing sexual?
Pole dancing is not inherently sexual.
At Embrace Pole Art & Fitness, pole is approached as:
- A movement practice
- A form of artistic expression
- A strength and confidence-building discipline
How you move, what you explore, and what pole means to you is always your choice. So you always have the choice to explore the sensual side of pole if that is what you are interested in, but you will never be forced to.
While pole is not inherently sexual, modern pole dance has its roots in the labor, creativity, and athleticism of sex workers, particularly strippers, who developed pole as a form of expression, income, and survival. As pole has moved into studios and fitness spaces, it’s important to honour that history and the communities who shaped the art long before it was considered mainstream. Any conversation about whether pole is “sexual” should begin with respect for the sex workers whose bodies, skill, and innovation made, and continue to make, pole what it is today.
How much do pole dancing classes cost in Edmonton?
Pricing varies depending on class type and commitment level.
At Embrace Pole Art & Fitness, we offer:
- Beginner-friendly intro options
- Drop-in classes
- Class packs
- Memberships
Introductory offers such as our Pole Baby Trial Membership are available for new students who want to try pole dancing in Edmonton without a long-term commitment.
Do I need to lose weight before starting pole dancing?
No.
Pole dancing is for every body, and strength is developed through practice, not prerequisite body changes. Students of all shapes and sizes thrive in pole classes every day.
Your body is already welcome here.
Will I feel uncomfortable or judged in class?
This is one of the most common concerns, and one of the biggest surprises.
Our Edmonton pole studio is built on:
- Body neutrality and respect
- Encouragement over comparison
- Community over competition
- Support, inclusion, consent, and care
Most students arrive feeling nervous and leave feeling supported, capable, and proud.
How often should I take pole classes to see progress?
For most beginners, 1–2 classes per week is ideal. As you progress, this will likely increase depending on your personal goals.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Even one weekly class will help you build strength, confidence, and familiarity with pole movement over time.
Can I try pole dancing without committing long-term?
Yes.
We offer level 1 drop in classes specifically for first-time students. These classes are designed to help you experience pole dancing in a supportive, low-pressure environment, and you can start at anytime.
Trying one class can be enough to know if it’s for you.
